City News for the Residents of Dawsonville—MAY 2021

Message from your Mayor Mike Eason…….

Hello, citizens!  It’s good to talk to you again through the newsletter and I hope all is well in your world. The city continues to function and function effectively and we have a lot of activities going on.

On Friday, May 7th, we had the ribbon-cutting for the Main Street Park along with our first Food Truck Friday.  It was attended by many and everyone seemed to enjoy the festivities.  We will continue these on the first Friday of every month (some on the second Friday, depending on holidays) and look forward to having everyone participate and enjoy these events.

On a sad note, Post 2 City Council member Steven Tolson has resigned, due to moving outside the city to find a new and larger home for his family.  The position was filled by William Illg at the City Council meeting on Monday, May 17th.  Mr. Illg will represent the Post 2 district of our City. There will be a general election in November 2021 to elect a council member for Post 2 for the next four years.

Contractors have installed and will be enhancing two pavilions at Main Street Park, which will be completed in the next few months to provide space for events by rental or just to use.

Two corn hole sets have been installed near the stairs at Main Street Park (on the Allen Street side), and at this time, you can bring your own bags.  We are approving the construction of a skate park and will be installing 14 exercise stations in the near future. Come over and enjoy this great facility!

Please contact me or any member of Council or our staff for any assistance we can provide.

A  message from your City Manager Bob Bolz …….

COVID numbers are improving. Staff continues our pandemic protocol and modified behavior and City Hall remains open
to the public. We encourage everyone to remain vigilant and practice appropriate measures to protect yourself and others.

Bids are being taken for the paving of Memory Lane, Main Street and Jack Heard Street, as well as for additional sidewalks in the vicinity of the Farmers Market and Main Street Park. The bid opening is scheduled for June 10th.

Main Street Park continues to be the site of bustling activity with folks taking advantage of the gorgeous spring weather. Two new picnic shelters have been constructed and should receive electricity and concrete floors very soon. Fourteen fitness stations have been received and staff will be pouring pads and installing the equipment in the coming weeks. Our new dog park, located just down Memory Lane from Main Street Park, is open and receiving a great deal of use. This project was jointly carried out with an Eagle Scout candidate and the final touches are planned in the coming week,   including signage, water fountain, etc.

The City hosted the grand opening and ribbon cutting for the park in conjunction with our first food truck night on May 7th. The event was a great success with over 500 people visiting. The next food truck night is June 11th and it will be held in Main Street Park.

The Amicalola Regional Farmers Market opened April 17th to a packed house. They plan to be open on Wednesday and Friday each week from 2:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. through the season. Stop in for a great selection of plants, fruits, vegetables, a variety of meats, honey and honey products, fresh baked goods, hand-crafted items and much more. Personnel refinished the floor in preparation for the season.

Many of you may have completed our survey on recycling advertised in last month’s newsletter. Once complete, we will share the results with you.

We hope to begin featuring a different city business each month. Our goal is to let everyone know what wonderful businesses can be found in our city. If you are interested in having your business featured, please contact Sara at City Hall by calling 706-265-3256 or click here to email Sara.
